Stay at Starcroft Farm Cabins

Since we’re so close to the site of the Battle of Hastings, one of this country’s most infamous historical events, we thought we’d offer an alternative, contemporary take on local history.

Beyond the questions around the battle itself, this part of East Sussex is full of untold stories and little known characters, and we hope our cabins help you discover some of them.

As a way into some of these lost tales, we’ve named each cabin after a prominent woman connected to the land here during three pivotal eras - medieval, Victorian and 1920s - and have curated a collection of art and books inside related to each.

So take a peek inside your chosen cabin, and delve into the curiosities of the past…

Lucy

This cabin is inspired by the bohemian artists, writers and thinkers, like Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville West, whose work was inspired by Sussex in the 1920s.

Catherine

This cabin embraces the spirit of adventure of the women travellers and botanists who lived in East Sussex in Victorian times, from Annie Brassey to Marianne North.

This cabin reimagines the 1066 story and the years following, offering a feminine perspective of medieval life, full of unexpected colour, woodland folklore and a deep faith in nature.
